The Joy of Cheese January Events

20101228-Serious-Cheese-DoddingtonThursday January 10:  Fortified:  Ports, Sherries and Beyond with Cheeses to Match at 92Y Uptown, 92nd and Lexington
Stilton and Port is a classic combination but there are plenty of amazing pairing opportunities with the unique sweetness found in various sherries, ports, madeiras, and other fortified wines.  Dave Herman will select, introduce and lead discussion on the wines; Martin Johnson will do likewise for the cheeses.  For ticket information, visit, http://www.92y.org/tickets/production.aspx?pid=88740

Wednesday January 23rd:  Winter Wednesdays with Beer at Gastronomie 491, 491 Columbus Avenue (between 83rd and 84th)I’ll present six cheeses and Maggie Fuller of 12% Imports will present six beers to match them.  Expect rare beers like Evil Twin’s Freudian Slip, T’Gaverhopke’s Singing Blond, and the Emilisse TIPA.  The cheeses will be six of the best from the Gastronomie 491 collection.  For ticket information, visit, http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/313074

January 24:  Dubbel, Tripels and more:  A Survey of the Belgian Brewing Tradition with Cheeses to Match at 92Y Uptown, 92nd & Lexington
The stereotype of a Belgian beer is a brew that is somewhat sweet, slightly strong, and always delicious.  Please join us for eight pairings of beers and cheese that will either confirm or confound those notions (except the part about delicious).   For ticket information, visit http://www.92y.org/tickets/production.aspx?pid=88744

January 30:  Winter Wednesdays with Wine at Gastronomie 491What are the heartier wines for colder weather?  Michael Whidden will answer that question with six selections and I’ll match those choices with six exceptional cheeses from the Gastronomie 491 collection.    For ticket information, visit http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/313078

About jmartin437

I've worked in and around the world of high end cheese for 27 years. I've been everything from a department manager who hired and fired and trained staffs to a weekend warrior who shows up ties on an apron the middle of a rush and talks to customers and cleans up the place. I enjoy it all, and I especially like my current situation conducting informal seminars about cheese at area bars and in class at the 92nd St. Y. The current schedule is always up at thejoyofcheese.blogspot.com. In addition I conduct private events that are perfect to lead off birthday parties for foodies and sommeliers and also they make great entertainment for corporate team building events and associates meetings at law firms. In addition, I've been a freelance journalist for 27 years. Currently my profiles of leading musicians and filmmakers appear in the Wall Street Journal and www.theroot.com. I also wrote about sports for the Root, and for five loooong years, which included the entirety of the Isiah Thomas Knicks era, I wrote about the NBA for the New York Sun. I enjoyed writing about basketball so much that I now do it here at rotations for free.
