The Joy of Cheese and Gastronomie 491 Present The Winter Warmers Series

New Yorkers rarely arrive at a consensus on anything, but I think there’s more than general agreement that this winter is brutally cold.  There are few better way to combat the cold than with great pairings of cheese and wine or (and, if you prefer) great pairings of cheese and beer.  On two upcoming Tuesdays, Gastronomie 491 will offer a night of each.

Please join us February 25th at 7 for the first of our Winter Warmers series, which will offer six delicious pairings of wine and cheese.  Nikolai Santurian, the new owner of West Side Wine, the amazing boutique wine shop, just a few doors down from Gastronomie will select and discuss the wines.  I’ll choose and introduce the cheeses.  Tickets are $20 and available via this link,

Crooked Stave Hop SavantOn March 4, we will switch the beverage to beer and offer six dynamic pairings of cheese and beer.  Maggie Fuller of 12% Imports, possibly the leading importer of small producer craft beer, will select and discuss beverages from her amazing portfolio and I’ll match them with great cheeses and a topical joke or two.  Tickets are $20 and available via this link,

Gastronomie 491 is located at 491 Columbus Avenue between 83rd and 84th.  Both events figure to run until a little after 8, just enough time to shop for your favorite cheeses and then either brave the chill to West Side Wine, a few doors to our south, or shop from our beer case which is next to the cheese case.  We hope to see you for some amazing pairings.

About jmartin437

I've worked in and around the world of high end cheese for 27 years. I've been everything from a department manager who hired and fired and trained staffs to a weekend warrior who shows up ties on an apron the middle of a rush and talks to customers and cleans up the place. I enjoy it all, and I especially like my current situation conducting informal seminars about cheese at area bars and in class at the 92nd St. Y. The current schedule is always up at In addition I conduct private events that are perfect to lead off birthday parties for foodies and sommeliers and also they make great entertainment for corporate team building events and associates meetings at law firms. In addition, I've been a freelance journalist for 27 years. Currently my profiles of leading musicians and filmmakers appear in the Wall Street Journal and I also wrote about sports for the Root, and for five loooong years, which included the entirety of the Isiah Thomas Knicks era, I wrote about the NBA for the New York Sun. I enjoyed writing about basketball so much that I now do it here at rotations for free.
